Following a recent report in the Enfield Independent regarding bogus callers, Alexandra Locksmiths wanted to re-highlight the potential dangers and what to do about such visits.

Over the August Bank Holiday weekend, a man had called at a home in Bullsmoor Way, Waltham Cross. He had claimed that there was problem with the local water supply and that he was present to deal with the problem. He then proceeded to ‘check the taps’ at the home. Whilst he distracted the victim, a second man also entered the Waltham Cross home and stole money from the property.

The first man is described as in his forties, white, 5’10” tall and has dark hair. He was dressed in dark clothes and was also carrying a clipboard. The local Police would like to hear from anyone that may also have been contacted or if you saw the men in the area. You can contact the police on 101 or report any sightings anonymously to Crime Stoppers on 0800 555 111.

Help for dealing with unexpected callers:

  • If you are at home and have an unexpected visitor to your home, first and foremost remember – you do not have to answer the door!
  • If you have a spy hole fitted to your front door,  always use it before opening the door. That way you can decide whether or not to open the door at all.
  • Always use a security chain, if you have one fitted. It is added security for you and can be used to examine proof of identity.
  • Always ask for ID from the person calling at your home. This can be verified with a quick phone call to either the relevant utilities company or the police on 101. Never worry about asking to see ID. Any genuine caller will have absolutely no problem with showing you their ID card.
