Small Business Saturday

Small Business Saturday UK

Small Business Saturday UK is a grassroots, non-political, non-commercial campaign, which highlights small business success and encourages consumers to ‘shop local’ and support small businesses in their communities. The day itself takes place on the first shopping Saturday in December each year, but the campaign aims to have a lasting impact on small businesses.

In 2014, Small Business Saturday UK took place on 6th December and as part of the build up to the day, there was a campaign to find 100 small businesses – the “Small Biz 100” – to represent the entire UK small business community and to be showcased one each day for the 100 days leading up to Small Business Saturday. Alexandra Locksmiths were delighted to be chosen, and we were featured on 7th September.

On the 5th December we were invited along with all the other winners to attend a reception at Downing Street complete with a festive street fair and children’s choir! In attendance, as well as many of our fellow winners and the organisational team behind Small Business Saturday UK, were Karren Brady and George Osborne. It was a terrific day and we met some really interesting people. We were very happy to be part of the whole experience and we hope to be involved again in 2015.

You don’t need to wait for a special day to support small business, though! Quite often people shop at big chains and supermarkets because these shops are convenient and have high visibility. However, a lot of the time, you can buy exactly the same items from smaller shops that are closer to home. Supporting local companies keeps the local community alive, which in turn makes for a better and safer environment for everyone.
