Leon Williams, 37, of Cranley Gardens, Muswell Hill, was one of the gang who smashed their way into the jewellers’ Finsbury Park home late at night, tied up and tortured the couple then ransacked their store in Edmonton.
Leon Williams was jailed for 10 years (May 3) at Woolwich Crown Court for conspiracy to burgle, alongside two other men. Jewellery worth £200,000 is still missing, but police seized around £800,000-worth before it could be sold on.
The court heard that the couple were attacked after returning from an evening out on Saturday, May 8 last year.
At 11.30pm two masked men burst in on the 50-year-old man and hit him on the head with a brick as he took a bath, then dragged him naked into the bedroom of the flat in Moray Road, Finsbury Park.
The gang grabbed his 56-year-old partner and handcuffed the couple’s hands behind their backs, then held an axe to the man’s throat and warned his fingers would be cut off unless he co-operated.
After demanding the keys and safe combinations for the Blingers jewellery shop run by the couple in Fore Street, Edmonton, two of the gang left and ransacked the store. The second pair left them handcuffed shortly after.
Their ordeal ended more than two hours after it began, when the man opened his front door with his teeth and yelled for help.
Police arrested two of the gang after a tip-off, armed officers stopping Kady Wilson, 24, and Gary Williams, 38, as they travelled through Hackney in a Toyota two days later.
Williams was wearing two watches worth £100,000 when he was arrested, and officers found a holdall in the boot containing a large amount of jewellery. More was found at Wilson’s home.
Later that day third gang member Turker Mustafa, 28, was arrested in his car in West Green Road, South Tottenham, and Leon Williams was arrested on July 13.
As well as Leon Williams’ conviction, Gary Williams, of Whittle Close, Walthamstow, was convicted of conspiracy to burgle and concealing £800,000 of stolen jewellery and sentenced to a total of 10-and-a-half years’ imprisonment, ordered to pay £20,000 costs and will have any profits he made from the stolen goods confiscated.
Mustafa, of Foundry Gate, Waltham Cross, pleaded guilty at the start of the trial to conspiracy to burgle and was sentenced to eight-and-a-half years’ jail.
Wilson, of Tuscany House, Medici Close, Ilford, was convicted of concealing £800,000 of stolen jewellery and was earlier sentenced to 12 months’ imprisonment, suspended for two years.
A fifth man, Leon Smith, 30, of Kings Drive, Gravesend, Kent, was acquitted on all counts of conspiracy to commit aggravated burglary, conspiracy to rob and handling stolen goods.
A sixth man, Dean Burke, 39, of no fixed address, faces a retrial in August after the jury could not decide on charges of conspiracy to commit aggravated burglary, conspiracy to rob and handling stolen goods.
