Our customer had fasteners on the windows, but didn’t realise that for wooden sliding sash windows bars, clasps and fasteners are not treated as locks. A pair of sash stops is the best way to secure this type of window. They prevent the windows being forced upwards and they can also be used to lock a sash window open for ventilation. As these locks are visible from the outside they also act as a visual deterrent. You can also use dual screws but they are fiddly and not as effective as sash stops.

We advise that all windows should be fitted with key operated locks even if they have been painted shut. There have been many burglaries in Bush Hill Park recently and the vast majority of burglars have accessed the properties via a ground floor window. Insurance companies will normally specify that any window on a ground or lower ground level or that it accessible via a flat roof, tree, cast iron drainpipe etc should be fitted with adequate security measures.
