CAMDEN police have warned that posting travel plans on social networking sites can make people’s homes a target for burglars.
They say that not only can messages such as “still packing my case” or “just landed” indicate when you are way, but thieves can find addresses by cross referencing surnames with online address databases.
Detective Chief Inspector Eric Phelps, of Camden police, said: “Many people use Facebook and Twitter so routinely that they continue updating their profiles even when they’re on holiday, potentially advertising their properties as vacant for potential burglars.
“Resist the temptation to update your friends constantly. If you do wish to update your friends, then create a group message and ensure it is sent to friends privately.”
Advise children around the dangers of advertising holiday plans also. I would also suggest that you check and review your privacy settings ensuring that your personal information is seen only by those people who you want it to be seen by.”
