Figures released recently reveal that personal ID documents, such as passports and driving licenses, are stolen in 74% of burglaries. ID documents were the only things stolen in one in seven burglaries committed in the UK last year.
People whose identity documents are stolen are at an increased risk of identity theft – where an individual posses as another illegally.
Store documents securely and separately
It is recommended that individuals store their documents securely and separately if possible. This will make it more difficult for thieves to steal multiple documents relating to the same person.
It is reported that a single identification document can fetch up to £15 on the black market. Grounds of documents relating to the same individual can fetch considerably higher prices.
